Shitty First Drafts Reading response week 3

Anne Lamott has an interesting style to her writing. I like how honest she is that everyone, even the best of writers are really terrible at first because they are just getting all the things together. I often think about how many times Shakespeare went back over Hamlet or Romeo and Juliet. Anne Lammott makes some excellent points about how a writer cant know what they are doing until they have done it. I think this applies to so much in life, that unless you do something bad first you will never know how to improve it. Sometimes it takes a whole paper to realize that you have too much going on. Anne shows that giving it all away in the first draft, so to speak, is really the best way to trim it up for the second draft. Also that a lot of people are embarrassed of their first draft, because it can be so extensive and drawn out. I definitely agree with her, I used to start my essays with a "web" which actually ended up being my conclusion. I always have wrote in a backwards format, I make my point and then go back and prove it. Being free with the first draft really allows you to go all out. You are able to get every point that you would like to get across and you don't have to feel bad about it because no one is going to even see it. I enjoyed shitty first drafts because it is encouraging to writers who may be new or even veteran writers to feel free and surrender to the writing process. Nothing happens the first time. If it did it would never be done.

Grammar Girl Pod Cast week - 4

I really enjoyed grammar girls article. She had some really good hints and tips that I never had heard of. These being reading your papers backwards line by line. That amazes me how it really can focus your attention to the phrasing or spelling of words that good old Microsoft abc check never sees. I enjoy letting my paper sit a few hours and reading it out loud, and practice this regularly, because it's the easiest way to avoid sentences that may not flow, and you realize you put and extra and or a where it didn't belong.
I also started laughing when she said to print it out and then read. I find that even my homework of what I am supposed to do is easier understood on paper, versus the computer screen. There is something about the screens, especially the LCD ones that just make you daze off all confused. I have missed many mistakes doing this. Of course they were always on my MySpace bulletins of the most common missed letters or words!
Lastly on her etcetera comment, I am a habitual etc person. I have almost started using it as a lazy way of avoiding all the "commas" in lists. I am very afraid of using commas, I either put them in the wrong place or not use them at all. So etcetera comes in handy for those times that I feel the comma is not worth the writing manuals!

Essay#1 Final Draft

Weight Loss Pills VS the Treadmill and sensible eating
It is estimated that one in four Americans is obese. Out of an office of 24, that mean six of the employees are obese. That is more than half of the office overweight and half at risk of severe health problems. With the obesity crisis in America, the "I don't have time to exercise" mind set has many Americans reaching for the quickest fix that money can buy, weight loss pills. Although dieters have had success with weight loss pills, weight loss pills are not the most successful approach to losing weight and keeping it off because they require additional restricted calorie diets, they suggest little to no exercise, and they have uncomfortable side effects like diarrhea and gastrointestinal problems; the long term effects are unknown.
When looking into a weight loss drug or pill, the dieter must look at the caloric intake required to lose weight and how long the pills are to be taken to maintain weight loss. Many weight loss pills contain appetite suppressants that do not let natural signals of hunger or thirst relay information; this in turn does not let the dieter know that he or she is hungry. The problem that exists with appetite suppression is, it interferes with the body's natural way of fueling itself and in turn does not teach the dieter how to successfully read the body's signals to live a healthier lifestyle, nor teaches the dieter to keep the weight off permanently. Weight loss pills also suggest a caloric intake between 900-1200 calories a day. Generally it is medically advised to stay above 1200 calories unless supervised by your doctor. What most dieters don't know is that taking small steps to a healthier lifestyle, though taking longer, will ultimately help them reach a realistic and successful goal weight. This will become second nature over time. For instance, a woman, who is 5'3", 150lbs, and is moderately active, will have a

basal metabolic rate or BMR of 2218 calories a day to maintain her weight*. This amount is the calories burned naturally by her metabolism. If she wants to lose weight, she needs to cut 500 calories out of her diet daily or burn 500 extra calories a day. In 7 days time this is equivalent to 3500 calories or 1 lbs. This is a realistic and achievable goal just by eating a sensible diet with portion control. When she uses the weight loss pill using the 900-1200 caloric intake diet, she consumes less than half of her natural BMR in caloric intake. At this point, even with the appetite suppressants most dieters resort to binging to make up the 1000 calories. She will initially drop pounds but she will also have to continue to eat at least the minimum amount of calories to continue to lose weight and keep taking the pills to keep the weight off.
Most dieters feel that they do not have enough time in the day to fit in 30 minutes of exercise. This is another deceitful perk of weight loss pills. Many weight loss pills claim to "burn calories while you sleep" or claim outlandish weight loss by "following this one rule." Many of these are heavily advertised that the dieter does not have to lift a finger, and if they haven't paid attention to the caloric intake rules and eat freely, they assume the pounds will just melt off their body with little to no work on their behalf. Many weight loss pills contain high amounts of caffeine, and many, though banned by the FDA, still contain ephedra or ephedra substitute and are just a cocktail of many different herbs, botanicals, vitamins, caffeine and laxatives. These are what help the initial weight loss, but, after they have relieved the dieter of excess water weight and intestinal back up, no longer produce weight loss without the strict diet. This weight will also return when the pill is no longer being used, in some cases by double. Just by exercising daily in conjunction with eating with healthy choices, the calories burned will add onto the 500 caloric deficit a day to lose weight and bring dieters closer to their goal without sitting and waiting in the bathroom for the pill to do the work. Also, by combining the two the dieter becomes more in the habit to do 15 jumping jacks during each commercial and will see more dramatic results. They will also be able to keep the weight off without a pill because they have formed healthy habits.
The most scary aspect of weight loss pills is the side effects. Many of them list a range of side effects, such as diarrhea, indigestion, constipation, bloating and other gastrointestinal problems. On the heart side of things, weight loss pills can cause high blood pressure, heart rate irregularities, sleeplessness, seizures, heart attacks, strokes, death; this list does not include the added dangers if you are taking any other medications or have a medical disorder of any kind. Because weight loss pills are not subject to the same laws by the FDA that other pharmaceutical drugs are, they can claim almost anything on the package, from it will "give you ripped abs" to "it will bust the cellulite off your rear". With little to no clinical studies and solely off their own reviews not the FDA's, the weight loss pill companies are able to make whatever claim they wish about their product, no matter how off-base they are. In result, thousands of dollars are spent in the weight loss aid and supplement industry for the new, revolutionary FDA "approved" pill that will make the dieters look like Mel Gibson or Brad Pitt.
The success from diet pills is nothing in the end next to the potential health risks as a result of diet pills. Dieters will gain the weight back unless they choose to put their health at risk and continue taking weight loss pills. Even when taking weight loss pills, dieters can still hit a plateau and gain the weight again. Instead of eating 900-1200 calories daily, sitting around waiting for the weight-loss pill to do its magic, and putting dieters health on the line, a healthier way to lose weight is to live a healthier lifestyle. This is accomplished by simply eating well balanced and proportioned meals, becoming more active in daily life, and making small steps to your ultimate weight loss goals.

Life is alot of things-Week One Writing Assignment

Here it is the beginning of the semester and I am contemplating what to write for my first essay. To be honest, writing has always seemed to come naturally for me. I had an English teacher who told me if I only took a few more classes I would be ready to turn my resume in to the New York Times. Now I find myself diving deep into the inner me. The one who has a passion for bringing people to a serene river, making their noses smell the refreshing mist of morning rain, and I'm stuck.

Currently my life is a hectic mess. My laundry is done daily and folded weekly, my kids follow behind me making a new trail as I pick up the old one. I have certain commitments I have made to a mommy group, bible study, losing weight and just managing a stay at home single mom routine as my husband is overseas. Anyone would think I was crazy to add one more thing to an already hectic life, but not me. I am the type of individual who takes pride in too much on my plate. The more wheels that spin around me the more production I complete. Mainly I am in school for me. School means a better the life for my husband, kids and myself. It offers up a lot of financial help to be well educated and to earn a degree. That is my main focus, my main goal.

Like any good hectic person, I love lists. I love plans. I live off of managing every point in my life and taking it all by force. If I sit and reflect too long, the other side of me kicks in. Procrastination. In life I have had this horrible curse to wait until the last minute. To avoid things until I just can't anymore. How I plan to avoid this is just to keep what works lists, planning, getting it done today, and not leaving it for tomorrow. I have high hopes for this class and am very excited to do well. To not lose momentum I plan on staying on top of it, and hope by the end you are smelling the mist from the rain, and hearing the tire swing on the playground.

~Introduction~

Hello, My name is Tabitha. I currently live in Fairbanks,AK. I am very new to Alaska, I have only been here a year. I'm from Washington State and miss my fresh air and evening walks. Alaska has shown me a new kind of beautiful and I am learning to accept it for the time I am here!
I tend not to hold high expectations of other things or people, but I tend to do well with English classes and especially writing. A lot of it comes naturally to me. What I have always lacked is the interest in reading or writing anything but music. So where I am most worried is not fulfilling my complete potential, or getting behind.
I like to hobby write. I have a Myspace page in which I write short stories, about different struggles an army wife goes through during the weeks up to deployment and the weeks there after. I like writing on my terms or when I just get an idea and have to share it with the world! When I am not writing, I am singing or playing my guitar.
